Reach Your Goals in 2017 – The 4 Must-Have Secrets to Make It Happen

2017 is here – can you believe it!? Do you remember what your new years resolutions for 2016 were?  Did you achieve any of them?

Let me start by saying that I have a lot to learn in the area of setting and achieving goals. However, I’d like to share with you a few tricks that I have found really helpful. I have learned that setting vague new years resolutions at the beginning of each year is NOT working for me.  I’ve found that setting goals that are practical, measurable, and achievable gives me a much greater success rate. Also, when I make my goals, I share them with others so I feel a sense of commitment.

So, let’s look ahead to 2017.

Have you set your goals?

Congratulations if you already have! You get extra kudos if you have committed them to paper. You get the first place big blue rosette if you have also shared them with others.

If you haven’t established your 2017 goals, get at it! Don’t put it off – start today to think about what you want to accomplish.

I offer three tricks to setting your goals.

  • Make them personal. Set your goals for you, not someone else.

  • Make them practical. They can be personal or work related, or both.

  • Share them with others. This helps you commit to your success.

Actually there is no magic to this exercise. Just ask yourself, “What do I really want to accomplish in 2017 before it turns into 2018?”

Let’s look at sales professionals: their livelihoods depend on their ability to generate sales. I still can’t believe the number of talented folks I speak with who have not taken the time to write down their goals, nor have they mapped out their supporting strategies to achieve their goals. I shudder to think how much more successful they would be if they set tangible goals, developed a plan to reach those goals, and shared their goals with their sales manager, a peer, their partner – or all three!

My last recommendation is to keep your goals visible.

They do you no good tucked away in a binder or shoved in a drawer. Post them in your office, carry them on a small card in your wallet or purse, and put a copy on your closet door to look at every morning when you get dressed.  You might even consider putting your goals on your computer’s screen saver. Subliminal reminders work.  And don’t forget to track your progress!

Mark Victor Hansen is co-creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul book series and is truly an inspirational and humorous speaker. When Mark has done speaking engagements, he has left small cards on the tables for participants to complete. He asked them to write down one goal, the time frame for completion and then he asked each person to have two or three others sign the card, not to agree or pass judgment on your goal, simply to acknowledge it. This is such a simple concept but it really helps!

Why not take a moment right now to write out your 2017 blogging goals?

Leave them in a comment below – and then “acknowledge” the goals of others with a quick reply comment. Even if your goal is to come up with goals for your blogging, type up a comment right now!

Plan to have a great year. I wish you success in exceeding your 2017 goals!
