The Direct Marketing Association understands just how powerful email marketing is. Their extensive research shows that a smart email marketing plan delivers $43 for every $1 spent. To take advantage of this powerful marketing tool, list building beginners should practice the following 6 top tips.
1 – Make Your Opt-In Freebie Valuable, and Worth Paying For
In exchange for a readers email, you are going to be giving away something. Make sure that your opt-in bribe is something that people would happily pay for, then give it away for free. This will raise your conversions, improve your level of integrity in the eyes of your subscribers, and make your list members anxious to open every email you send.
2 – Use a Reliable, “Big Name” Email Autoresponder Service
AWeber, Constant Contact and MailChimp are well-known and respected email autoresponder services. Stick with one of those 3 (or another experienced and popular provider) to make the process as comfortable for you and your subscribers as possible.
3 – Remove Everything But Your Opt-In Box and Text From Your Squeeze Page
Your landing page, also called a squeeze page, needs to provide traffic with just one of 2 choices – opt into your email list or leave. You need to remove any side columns, headers, footers and everything else on the page. Your capture page needs to have nothing more than your opt-in form and text.
4 – Just Ask For an Email Address
Remove all of the fields in your opt-in box requirements except the email address. This has been proven time and again to increase conversions. The more hoops you ask a potential subscriber to jump through to claim your opt-in bribe, the greater the chance that person will leave without joining your list.
5 – Start Today
List building may intimidate you. Learning how to use your autoresponder service may seem difficult at first. You may be putting off creating an opt-in freebie to exchange for email addresses. Many seasoned and wealthy Internet marketers say the number one mistake they made with their online business was not building a list right away. Start today, not tomorrow, and your list building efforts will be rewarded much more quickly.
6 – Don’t Start Selling Right Away
I know you want to start making money from your list, right away. However, your first 2 or 3 emails should all be quality content, no sales pitches. Follow-up your opt-in bribe with a “Thank You” email that surprises your subscribers with another high-quality and free piece of content. Follow that email up with at least 1 or 2 more problem-solving, solution producing emails. Only then should you start thinking about trying to make a sales pitch.
How To Make Money From A Small Email List
Can you really make money from a small email list? Do you need to have tens of thousands of subscribers to make a decent living online? The answers to those questions are yes and no respectively. People with relatively small lists of email subscribers make good money all the time.
It boils down to the relationship they have with their list.
Would you like some proof?
For example, brand new list builder John R Meese bought a WordPress theme. The theme was a popular item sold by Michael Hyatt, but it was a little “clunky”. John started hitting the WordPress forums, helping people through the problems they were having with this particular theme.
He began to build a list, which he had never done before, offering his help for free. He eventually built a course that solves any and every question someone using that WordPress theme would have. On just 250 subscribers and 8 emails, John did $10,000 dollars in just 7 days.
Another list building newbie, Cathryn Lavery has always been involved with journaling and self-improvement topics. She built a small list of 2,000 subscribers, and created a KickStarter project so she could fund creation and distribution of the Self Journal: Your Daily Structure for Success. She turned that small list into $40,000 in just 4 days, alerting them about her KickStarter program. She went on to do $322,000 on the basis of that 2,000 subscriber email list in 90 days.
Internet marketer Jason Van Orden outsold other seasoned Internet marketing experts in a product launch affiliate competition with a list of 10,000. The other marketers he beat had lists of 90,000, 100,000 and more.
You don’t need a large list to make money, you just need to have a good relationship with that list.
Over deliver, always giving more than the people on your list expect. Remember that these are human beings, and not just email addresses. Treat them accordingly. Ask them what they want. Then give it to them. Build a great relationship with the people on your list and a small list can do surprisingly well.
Only sell or promote every 3 or 4 emails. Deliver quality content, and sales will take care of themselves. Develop a set email schedule and stick to it. People love consistency, and get used to a regular delivery schedule. Your list subscribers can feel abandoned if you don’t reach out regularly, and that’s no way to drive engagement.
So tell me, what ways have you found to be extremely useful in email list building? And, if you don’t currently have an email list, what steps are you going to begin taking to create one?
